Backstory
The story of the Las Vegas Convention Center started in the 1950s. Local leaders wanted to fill hotel rooms when tourism dipped. They saw a chance to turn a failed race track (the Las Vegas Park Speedway) into something more useful. That idea turned into one of the most iconic convention centers in the U.S. The first version opened in 1959. It came with a silver-domed rotunda that seated 6,300 and a 90,000-square-foot show floor. That dome became a piece of Vegas history. It hosted major concerts and boxing matches. Even The Beatles performed there in 1964. Muhammad Ali and Sonny Liston fought there too. The UNLV basketball team played home games on that court until 1982. The original dome came down in 1991. That only opened the door for bigger things. Over time, the building saw multiple upgrades. A major push came after the Las Vegas Convention Center Act of 1971. This brought in $7 million to renovate and expand.
